A futuristic city is sharply divided between the working class and the ruling planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working class prophet who foresees the coming of a savior to mediate their disparities.
A spectacular science-fiction dramatization of 'class warfare’ amidst a curtain of Freudian, Marxist, Christian and expressionistic symbolism; unquestionably the inspiration for so much modern dystopian cinema. Watching Fritz Lang's 1927 epic today illustrates pre-shadows of contemporary sci-fi in its many forms. Though the film ends with an excessive somewaht banal climax (by todays cinematic standards), of unification between the workers and their greedy overlords, the film is filled with stunning archetypal imagery and grand-scale pageantry fitting for the period.
