The Tribulation is a seven year period of extreme difficulty on the earth, described in the book of Revelation. The three main reasons for the Tribulation are listed below:

To make an end of wickedness and wicked ones.

“The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is shaken violently. The earth shall stagger like a drunken man, and shall sway to and fro like a hammock; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again” (Isaiah 24:19-20).

The first purpose of the Tribulation is to end wickedness. The end of this verse above states that the reason for the judgments is that worldwide transgression will fall and not rise again.

The second purpose of the Tribulation is to bring about worldwide revival this is explored in Revelation 7:1-17. John states that 12,000 Jews will be selected from each of the Twelve Tribes totalling 144,000 Jews. These Jewish evangelists will bring about the worldwide revival.

The third reason of the Tribulation is to break the power / stubbornness of the Jewish nation. God will use this to break the power of the holy people to stimulate national regeneration. This is explained in Ezekiel 20:33-38.

The prophet Ezekiel draws a comparison with the Exodus. God will gather Jews from around the world, and then enter into a period of judgment (the Tribulation). Jewish people who are hostile to the things of God will be purged out at this time. Afterwards a whole new regenerated nation will enter the Promised Land ruled by the Messiah.
