Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God; in theological terms a procession of God. Holy Spirit is not separate from God but one with God as is Christ one with God

The Bible talks about quenching the Holy Spirit, which means to hinder believers from exercising their spiritual gifts in a group, gathering or a larger church setting.

The gifts of the Spirit help build and edify the Body, and the Bible lays down rules as to who and how these gifts are to be used.

I Thessalonians 5:19 cites quenching the Holy Spirit, importantly verse 20 warns about not taking prophesy seriously. The Thessalonians we very conservative about manifestations of the Holy Spirit, conversely The Corinthians’ we very liberal and without enough order, elders were weak in their handling of authority or restraint. This created disorder without accountability and failure to test the spirits.

The Bible expresses that there must be a degree of control by elders (who fulfil Bible qualifications only), or a church could descend into the Corinthian situation. Balance must be made; the Corinthian extreme should be encourage to some extent so as to keep away from the Thessalonians extreme too.

The Bible speaks 'plurally’ in the text that it is a sin of the church as a corporate body to quench the Spirit of God in this manner.

Sadly local churches of many denominations today largely have a 'set format' and only a few people have control of what goes on. In reality it is only they who give any significant input into the service. Furthermore, they are often overworked ‘get it done’ type personalities that don't have deep intimacy with their own partners, families or even with God (this is why the Biblical qualifications are important because they signify the state of their family and interpersonal relationship). This is sometimes a symptom of a church being largely immature and still on what the apostle Paul regarded as milk doctrines. In this situation the leadership, pastor or vicar never seem to transcend beyond being a milk feeding dairy. This feeds into becoming another classic example of quenching the spirit. Their are many highly gifted Bible students and testimony rich experienced men and women of God in church bodies today, lost in the crowd, sat on seats and silent each sunday, they live lives in a 'dairy farm’ because of 'man’s control', and many people’s ignorance of the importance of studying the scriptures. The answer to this situation is repentance then revival.

First Outpouring in the Bible...

In general, the prophet, preist and temple sacrifice formed the format for connection to God through the practise of offerings, sacrifice and personal obedience to God’s law. Furthermore, the Lord walked in the grounds among the people. This was quite different to the post-Pentecost scenario. In fact the first occurance God’s Holy Spirit being poured out in the Bible was on artisans, an exception to the rule can be seen below:

"See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; And he hath filled him with the spirit (Ruwach) of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship; And to devise (Chashab) curious works, …” (Exodus 35:31-32)
