Evangelism

Evangelism is the spreading of the Christian gospel (the Good News) by public preaching or personal witness. Clearly the Bible presents us with an incredible eternally lifesaving message, which naturally is fairly exciting. This faces one with the challenge of remaining fairly level headed with a message so astonishing.

'...preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching." (2 Timothy 4:2).

Some ideas for evangelism:

Just being nice to people will strike up conversations naturally.

Be aware of the aroma principle will make a difference (2 Cor 2:16).

Many people have resistance with some Bible themes because they have a had a bad experience with other Christians of one sort of another, so be sensitive.

Set up events, Bible studies, conferences, coffee meetings and days out. But make it clear what you are doing, people hate ulterior motives: it is not socially acceptable or loving. That goes for door to door chats too, if you are doing some 'door to door' or 'public speaking', don’t do what the JWs do and ask some inane question about life to start the conversation. Say who you are and what your doing so that people have a choice and don't feel they are being lured into some crazy cult.

Under no circumstances are believers meant to condemn, ridicule, force or control people against their freewill. Believers are simply to communicate their own testimony (story), and to be ready at any moment to give account of their faith to others. As believers, this dialogue should naturally emerge from our experience in Christ and our understanding of the scriptures without cliché or sub-cultural terminologies that demean or isolate the enquirer. This is an act of love and support, not and opportunity for heavy-handed attitudes or judgement. God is judge.

1. Work to be done

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38)

2. It is a commandment

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

3. Jesus is the only way

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

5. We have been given the Holy Spirit for supernatural ower in evangelism

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

6. How will people here without evangelism?

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (Romans 10:11-15)

And I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ. (Philemon 6)
