Theology

Why do so many especially charismatic believers mock theology? It seems they don't understand what it is, and they fear what they don’t know! Sadly many charasmatic churches across the world simply use the word theology as a by word, a point for mockery, and the wrong assumption that theology means something opposite to life in the spirit. So what is theology? Firstly theology actually covers and is relevant to every subject known to man! However, in just a few words it means this:

Theology: the study of the nature of God and religious belief.  For example in Christian theology when systematically developed God comes to be conceived as Father and Son and Holy Spirit

Theology (meaning God-discourse) it is the critical study of the concepts of God and of the nature of religious ideas within historical and contemporary contexts. Like reasoning or discussion concerning the Deity and extending to being the science of things divine. Typically it is a difficult and sometimes faith challenging subject taught and scrutinised in Universities.

This is what the Bible says about the study of God and religious belief (Theology):

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ JesusAll Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:14-17 ESV

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 2 (Tim 12:15 ESV)

My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. (Proverbs 3:1-2 ESV)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105 ESV)

“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. For if you will be careful to do all this commandment that I command you to do, loving the Lord your God, walking in all his ways, and holding fast to him… (Deut 11:18:23 ESV)

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. (Psalm 119:18 ESV).

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. (Psalm 119:9 ESV)

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2 ESV).

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. (Acts 17:11 ESV).

"So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.” (Acts 8:30-31 ESV).

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb 4:12 ESV).

'And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” (Luke 4:4 ESV).

My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. (Prov 2:1-5 ESV).

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. (Rev. 1:3 ESV).

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. (Hosea 4:6 ESV).

"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; (Psalm 1:1-6 ESV).
